What is a TIN?
A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique 10-digit number assigned to every taxpayer in Nigeria. It's your identity for all tax-related activities.
Format: 12345678-0001 (8 digits + dash + 4 digits)
Why Do You Need a TIN?
A TIN is required for:
- Opening bank accounts - Most banks now require TIN for corporate accounts
- Government contracts - No TIN = no contract (Section 72(4), NTA 2025)
- Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) - Needed for loans, visas, contracts
- Filing tax returns - Can't file without a TIN
- Business registration - Required for CAC registration
- Avoiding penalties - Working with unregistered contractors = ₦5M penalty

- Individuals earning any form of income
- Employees (your employer may have registered you)
- Freelancers and self-employed professionals
- Business owners (sole proprietors, partnerships)
- Companies (Limited Liability Companies)
- Non-profits and NGOs
How to Check if You Already Have a TIN
Many Nigerians already have a TIN but don't know it!
Check via JTB Portal
- Go to jtb.gov.ng/tin-verification
- Enter your NIN (National Identification Number)
- If registered, your TIN will be displayed
Check via FIRS
- Visit taxpromax.firs.gov.ng
- Click "TIN Verification"
- Enter your details (name, date of birth, NIN)
Check with Your Employer
Ask your HR department - they may have registered you when you joined.
How to Get a TIN (Individuals)
Option 1: Online Registration (Fastest)
Via Joint Tax Board (JTB):
- Go to jtb.gov.ng
- Click "TIN Registration"
- Select "Individual"
- Enter your NIN (National Identification Number)
- Fill in personal details (name, DOB, address)
- Enter your BVN (Bank Verification Number)
- Upload passport photograph
- Submit application
- TIN issued within 24-48 hours via SMS/email
Via FIRS TaxProMax:
- Visit taxpromax.firs.gov.ng
- Click "Register"
- Select "Individual"
- Complete the registration form
- Verify via email/phone OTP
- TIN assigned upon verification
Option 2: In-Person Registration
Visit any of these:
- FIRS office in your state
- State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) office
- Authorized tax stations
Required Documents:
- Valid ID (NIN slip, Driver's License, Passport)
- BVN printout or bank statement
- Passport photograph (2 copies)
- Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement)
- Employment letter (if employed)
Processing time: 1-3 working days
How to Get a TIN (Companies/Businesses)
For Registered Companies
Step 1: Have your CAC documents ready
- Certificate of Incorporation
- Memorandum & Articles of Association
- Form CAC 1.1 (Statement of Share Capital)
- Particulars of Directors
Step 2: Register on TaxProMax
- Go to taxpromax.firs.gov.ng
- Click "Register" → "Corporate"
- Enter RC Number (company registration number)
- Fill company details (name, address, directors)
- Upload CAC documents
- Submit application
Step 3: Verification
- FIRS verifies with CAC database
- May request additional documents
- TIN issued within 3-5 working days
For Sole Proprietors
You can register as an individual OR register your business name:
For business name registration:
- Register business with CAC (get BN number)
- Use BN number to register on TaxProMax
- Select "Business Name" category

Common Issues & Solutions
"My NIN is not found"
- Ensure you're using the correct 11-digit NIN
- Visit NIMC office to verify your NIN status
- If recently issued, wait 48 hours for sync
"BVN verification failed"
- Ensure name matches exactly as on bank records
- Contact your bank to verify BVN details
- Try using a different bank's BVN if you have multiple
"Company not found on CAC"
- Verify RC number is correct
- Ensure annual returns are up to date
- Visit CAC to clear any compliance issues
"TIN application rejected"
- Check rejection reason in the portal
- Common issues: incomplete documents, mismatched names
- Resubmit with corrected documents
After Getting Your TIN
Once you have your TIN:
- Keep it safe - You'll need it for all tax activities
- Share with employer - So they can file PAYE correctly
- Add to invoices - Required for business invoices
- File returns - Now you can file tax returns
- Get TCC - Apply for Tax Clearance Certificate if needed
