FACT CHECK: Is Everyone Paying 20% Tax Now? Understanding the Real Rates
The Viral Claim
Another message making rounds:
> "New tax law means everyone pays 20%! If you earn ₦800,000 you pay ₦160,000 tax! Government is stealing from us!"
This is COMPLETELY WRONG. The math doesn't even work that way.
How Nigerian Tax Actually Works
Progressive Tax System
Nigeria uses progressive tax rates. This means:
- Different portions of your income are taxed at different rates
- Lower income = lower tax rate
- You're NOT taxed at one flat rate on everything
The Actual 2025/2026 Tax Brackets
| Income Band | Tax Rate |
|---|---|
| First ₦800,000 | 0% |
| Next ₦2,000,000 | 15% |
| Next ₦2,400,000 | 18% |
| Next ₦5,000,000 | 21% |
| Next ₦30,000,000 | 23% |
| Above ₦40,200,000 | 25% |
Wait... 0% on First ₦800,000?!
YES! This is the biggest win of the new tax law:
- If you earn **₦800,000 or less per year** (about ₦66,667/month)
- You pay **ZERO income tax**
- This covers **all minimum wage earners**
Let's Do Real Examples
Example 1: ₦70,000/month (₦840,000/year)
The viral message says: "Pay 20%" = ₦168,000 tax
Reality with new law:
- First ₦800,000 at 0% = ₦0
- Remaining ₦40,000 at 15% = ₦6,000
- **Actual tax: ₦6,000** (not ₦168,000!)
Effective rate: 0.7% (not 20%)
Example 2: ₦200,000/month (₦2,400,000/year)
The viral message implies: "Pay 20%" = ₦480,000 tax
Reality (simplified, before CRA):
- First ₦800,000 at 0% = ₦0
- Next ₦1,600,000 at 15% = ₦240,000
- **Tax before reliefs: ₦240,000**
After CRA (Consolidated Relief Allowance), actual tax is even lower!
Effective rate: ~6-8% (not 20%)
Example 3: ₦500,000/month (₦6,000,000/year)
Reality (before CRA):
- First ₦800,000 at 0% = ₦0
- Next ₦2,000,000 at 15% = ₦300,000
- Next ₦2,400,000 at 18% = ₦432,000
- Remaining ₦800,000 at 21% = ₦168,000
- **Tax before reliefs: ₦900,000**
Effective rate: 15% (still not 20%, and that's before CRA!)
The Consolidated Relief Allowance (CRA)
Before applying tax rates, you get to deduct:
- **₦200,000** OR **20% of gross income** (whichever is higher)
- **Plus** relief for pension contributions
This further reduces your taxable income!
Where Does "20%" Come From?
Looking at the tax table:
- 15%, 18%, 21%, 23%, 25% are rates on different brackets
- There's no single "20%" rate
- Someone probably saw these numbers and panicked
Comparing Old vs New Law
| Scenario | Old Tax | New Tax | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₦70,000/month | ~₦50,000+ | ₦6,000 | ₦44,000+ |
| ₦150,000/month | ~₦180,000 | ~₦120,000 | ₦60,000 |
| ₦300,000/month | ~₦450,000 | ~₦350,000 | ₦100,000 |
Most people pay LESS under the new law!
What Taiwo Oyedele Said
> "The new tax law is designed to reduce the burden on low and middle-income earners. The 0% bracket on the first ₦800,000 is historic - Nigeria has never exempted minimum wage from tax before."
> "Anyone telling you that you'll pay more tax under this law either hasn't read it or is deliberately spreading misinformation."
The Bottom Line
- **NO**, tax is not 20% for everyone
- **YES**, the first ₦800,000 is tax-free (0%)
- **YES**, most Nigerians will pay LESS tax
- **NO**, nobody earning ₦800,000 pays ₦160,000 tax
